There are three basic categories in the Mediterranean cruise itinerary—the Western Mediterranean, Eastern Mediterranean and Holy Land. It is a good idea to study the route that you are going to take and learn a little about the various ports that you would dock in. This would include the surrounding areas of Asia, Africa and Europe.

If you take the Western Mediterranean route you will get to visit exotic locales like Italy, France. You might get to take a close look at Barcelona, Rome and Madrid. One of these cities might be your starting point for all you know. Read up about these places in advance. Familiarize yourself with their culture and ways of life.

Barcelona, for example is the capital of the Catalonia region in Spain. If you visit this place don’t forget to drop into the Picasso Gallery and feast of paella, Spain’s national dish.
The city of Civitavecchia, the gateway to Rome is another popular destination on the Mediterranean cruise itinerary. No matter how much you want to linger amongst the palatial ruins of Rome, your schedule will probably not allow you to do the same. But if you do stop over, try and visit Colosseum, the Sistine Chapel, the Vatican and the Trevi Fountain. Also spend some time in one of the local restaurants and get a taste of the lip smacking pasta.
While in France, some popular stopovers include the cities of Marseille, Nice or Cannes.

Marseille is an ultimate shopping destination besides being the largest port in France. Nice, which is about 24 ns from Cannes, has the loveliest beaches. You can spend hours ambling along the coast soaking in the beauty of the scenery. Cannes as you must be aware hosts the famous and widely acclaimed film festival.

Whether you take the Eastern or the Western cruises you are likely to touch some ports in the Holy land. Besides this there are certain cruises which concentrate on the Holy Land, specifically.
